Job Description

The University of Texas at Austin-McDonald Observatory is a major astronomical research observatory equipped with a wide range of instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy in the optical and infrared spectra, located 16 miles from Fort Davis, Texas. The Night Operations Supervisor works in the Observing Support team and leads a small team of remote observing assistants that assists our astronomical users with the Mt. Locke telescopes at McDonald Observatory safely and efficiently. Most of the work will be from sunset to sunrise in front of a computer console and will include administrative duties supporting the remote observing program.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Astronomy or a related field and at least two years of experience with operations in an astronomical research facility. Experience in a large research-oriented environment. Experience with astronomical observing, including visual or instrument-based techniques. Demonstrable familiarity with positional astronomy. Ability to communicate with various audiences, including science users, engineers, educators, and nighttime and administrative staff. Ability to organize and prioritize work, to meet deadlines and expectations. Ability to work independently in a complex technical environment during overnight observing operations, and use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to make appropriate decisions regarding the safety of the telescope facility.
