Postdoctoral Position in Multimessenger High-Energy Astrophysics
Job Summary
Budapest
Hungary
Job Description
The Konkoly Observatory of the HUN-REN Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences (Budapest, Hungary) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in multimessenger high-energy astrophysics, as part of the newly formed Lendület ("Momentum") research group, the Konkoly Multimessenger Group (NuLab) led by Dr. Emma Kun. Funded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the group investigates the physical origin of high-energy neutrino emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN), combining public IceCube neutrino data, NuSTAR hard X-ray observations, Fermi-LAT gamma-ray analyses, and VLBI radio jet kinematics. The group maintains active international collaborations with partner institutes, mainly in Germany and the US.
The successful candidate will lead the hard X-ray analysis efforts of the project. The appointment is available for 2 years starting in early fall 2026, with a possible 1-year extension within the Lendület grant period, or from annually advertised Hungarian postdoctoral fellowship calls. Candidates with a PhD (completed or near completion) in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in X-ray data analysis and/or AGN multimessenger astrophysics is an advantage but not required; motivated candidates from all areas are also welcome.
Konkoly Observatory is Hungary's largest astronomical institute, located in a renovated building in a nature reserve about 30 minutes from the center of Budapest. It has been expanding dynamically in recent years, hosting ERC-funded projects, Hungarian excellence grants (Lendület, Élvonal), ESA projects, and international staff members. The observatory recognizes the importance and benefit of a diverse and inclusive working climate, which ultimately leads to further advancements in science, equity, and social justice. We therefore welcome applications from candidates without regard to their national origin, race, gender identity, or religion.
Compensation and Benefits
HUN-REN is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The postdoc will be a state employee and will have access to the Hungarian public health system. The group provides a dedicated workstation. The super gross salary is approximately EUR 31,900 (approximately USD 36,500) per year. Funding for conference and workshop travel will be available.
