Job Description

Ashoka University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a Chair Professorship in Astrophysics. Candidates of any nationality, with a record of excellence in research, teaching and outreach in this field are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be appointed as the “Sunanda and Santimay Basu Chair in Astrophysics” for a five-year term, renewable upon mutual agreement. The salary will be internationally competitive.

Ashoka is India’s first Liberal Arts and Sciences Research University. Located near Delhi, it integrates the humanities and social sciences with the natural and mathematical sciences. It is recognised as one of India’s best universities, with a world-class faculty across all its disciplines.

A Chair Professorship at Ashoka University has recently been endowed by two renowned physicists, Sunanda Basu and Santimay Basu, for teaching and research in Astrophysics. This position will be associated with the Physics Department. Through this hire, and others planned over the next few years, the University wishes to encourage cutting edge work in Astrophysics. This will culminate in the setting up of a Centre for Astrophysics to train and nurture Indian students and scientists in this field. The Centre will cover both theoretical and observational aspects of the subject, as well as its connections with Data Science and other disciplines. Astrophysics is a rapidly growing field in the Indian academic sector and this Centre will seek to make connections with many of the upcoming facilities. The Centre will be advised by a group of scientists who are global leaders in their areas of research. The chair-holder will be expected to lead the setting up of this Centre at Ashoka.

Interested applicants should submit a detailed curriculum vitae together with a description of their vision for teaching and research in Astrophysics and of the proposed Centre for Astrophysics. Ashoka is committed to creating a diverse environment. Women and candidates from traditionally disadvantaged categories are strongly encouraged to apply.
