Research Astrophysicist

The Astrophysics Division of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center plans to hire a civil service Research Astrophysicist to join the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Project Science team. This provides an opportunity for a leading role in a NASA Astrophysics Flagship mission.

The Roman Space Telescope recently entered implementation phase and is now actively building and testing flight hardware. The role within the project science team is flexible and will include serving as either the lead Operations or I&T scientist. An Operations scientist would guide the ongoing refinement, implementation, and execution of the onboard operations for Roman. An I&T scientist would provide scientific guidance and oversight for the development, implementation, and execution of the I&T program and the early in-orbit verification program.

The candidate will conduct an independent program of research in an area relevant to Roman science. For the I&T scientist preference will be given to applicants with a background and experience in instrument integration and/or calibration; for the operations scientist preference will be given to applicants with experience in survey planning, high throughput computing and/or in the operation of large space observatories.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of research excellence in astrophysics, including research communication and publications. A Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or a related field is highly desirable. U.S. citizenship is required. The position can accommodate early to senior-level researchers with a salary commensurate with past experience.
