Job Description
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Cape Town is a research-intensive department with a long-standing leading international reputation in multi-wavelength observational astronomy, particularly in optical and radio astronomy. The Department of Astronomy also has a well-established undergraduate major in astrophysics and hosts one of the nodes of the postgraduate National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme (NASSP).
The Department of Astronomy seeks to appoint a senior, full-time academic in the field of Extragalactic Multi-wavelength Astronomy. Applications are particularly sought from scientists whose research is focused on radio continuum and/or HI observations of galaxies, and who could make extensive use of MeerKAT, the precursor to the mid-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).
The successful candidate will be expected to further strengthen and complement the extragalactic research in the Department of Astronomy, to lead and conduct their own research programme, and to raise funds for research. The successful candidate will have access to MeerKAT through Open Time calls, collaborative programs within existing MeerKAT large survey projects, the South African share on SALT, and telescopes of the SAAO.
The position is being offered at the Associate Professor / Professor level, depending on the stature and experience of the potential candidates. Responsibilities also include the teaching of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the supervision of postgraduate students and departmental and faculty administrative duties.
Minimum requirements:
At both levels
- A PhD in astronomy or a related discipline;
- Significant teaching experience and successful post-graduate student supervision at MSc and PhD level; and
- An established research track record.
At Associate Professor level:
- An excellent reputation and leadership in the field, as demonstrated by publications, post-graduate supervision and high-level professional involvement; and
- A track record of successful research fund applications will be advantageous.
At Professor level:
- An outstanding reputation and leadership in the field, as demonstrated by publications, post-graduate supervision, high-level professional involvement and international recognition; and
- A track record of successful research fund applications.
