The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the College of Staten Island (CSI) of the City University of New York (CUNY) welcomes applications for a full-time Lecturer, to begin in August 2022. This full-time Lecturer position is eligible for a Certificate of Continuing Employment (CCE) after five years.

 

The successful candidate will teach primarily 100-level physics and astronomy courses at CSI; occasionally teach higher-level courses; collaborate with the CSI School of Education in its science education and outreach efforts; and serve a significant role to shape, coordinate, and develop the department's rapidly evolving physics and astronomy curriculum. Disciplinary scholarship is not a requirement for promotion in this position; however, the successful candidate will be free - and encouraged - to conduct and maintain a research program, particularly in the areas of astronomy, physics, or science education.

 

The CSI Department of Physics and Astronomy currently consists of seven full-time faculty members active in research areas such as galaxy evolution, photonics, quantum computing, condensed matter, and nanotechnology, and offers bachelor's degrees in physics and physics 7-12 secondary education. We teach 2,000 students per year in a wide variety of major, service, and general education courses, in collaboration with a large cohort of part-time faculty, and we advise Ph.D. students through our consortial connection with the CUNY Graduate Center. We are home to the CSI Astrophysical Observatory, the largest publicly accessible telescope in New York City. Our faculty have strong academic and research connections with institutions throughout the area, including the American Museum of Natural History, the CUNY Astro faculty network, and the Flatiron Institute.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in physics and/or astronomy preferred
  • A Master or Ph.D. in physics and/or astronomy, significant knowledge of secondary education programs, especially in physics and other science education highly preferred
  • Experience and demonstrated success with teaching and mentoring undergraduates in college-level physics and astronomy courses
  • Experience with innovative pedagogies and strategies, especially when applied to the effective teaching of students who are members of minority and underserved populations
