Job Description

New Mexico State University is seeking an Intermediate Telescope Technologist for the

SDSS 2.5m telescope operations at Apache Point Observatory (APO).

As the Sloan Digital Sky Survey moves into phase 5 with a new robotic fiber positioner, we are looking for a new Intermediate Telescope Technologist to support the engineering, maintenance, and operations of SDSS telescope facilities at APO. Person will: Participate in the design, fabrication, assembly and commission of new hardware, Develop and maintain operational procedures and maintenance schedules, Plan and coordinate maintenance work.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  Perform telescope and instrument preparations, troubleshooting and repair. Includes computer operations, some programming, and data analysis. Perform scheduled and emergency hardware maintenance on telescope and other observing systems. Some operating of milling machine, cutters, welders, drill press, grinder and lathe machine. Direct, delegate, and evaluate work of staff on assigned projects. Prepares telescope and instruments for nightly operations. Performs electrical and mechanical trouble-shooting and repair. Performs data analysis, instrument and telescope daytime operational troubleshooting. Requires use of material handling equipment, computers and hand tools.
