Job Description

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral position in Euclid science at the University of Manitoba (UM), funded in part by the Canadian Space Agency's Research Opportunities in Space Science grant 23EXPROSS2. The postdoctoral fellow will carry out photometric and spectroscopic studies of galaxy and quasar populations over cosmic time using data from the recently-launched Euclid space telescope as well as associated multiwavelength observations. The latter will also include preparations for future wide-field space-based observatories such as the CASTOR mission, Canada's top priority in space for the next decade. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada's Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre.

Applicants are required to have their PhD by the time they start their position. Experience with imaging data reduction and analysis, IR and/or space-based observations, and modelling stellar populations will be considered a strong asset. This position will be full-time employment at the University of Manitoba with a negotiable starting date, with preference given to candidates who can start as soon as possible, and no later than September, 2025.

Dr. Woods is Science Co-lead of the Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and UV Research (CASTOR) mission, and his group collaborates closely with academia, government, and industry partners on both astrophysical theory & wide-field astronomy as well as software and instrumentation development for next generation facilities. The CSA-funded Euclid Scientist will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Euclid team members at the National Research Council of Canada in Victoria, and the eXtreme astrophysics group of Prof. Safi-Harb at UM. Research in Astrophysics at UM is enabled by observations conducted with state-of-the-art international telescopes and high-performance computing clusters. Additional facilities are available through Compute Canada.

The University of Manitoba is committed to the principles of equity, diversity & inclusion and to promoting opportunities in hiring, promotion and tenure (where applicable) for systemically marginalized groups who have been excluded from full participation at the University and the larger community including Indigenous Peoples, women, racialized persons, persons with disabilities and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual and other diverse sexual identities). All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.

Starting salary will be between CAD$50,000 - $60,000 depending on experience, together with $5,000 in travel and other support funding per year. One-time relocation expenses of up to $5,000 will also be available at the start of the contract. Remote work from within Canada may be considered for exceptional candidates, with preference given to candidates who will be able to commute to either the UM Winnipeg campus or NRC-HAA in Victoria.
