Lecturer Full-Time- UW Astronomy

Position Description

We are seeking to fill a non-tenured full-time lecturer position in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington.  The anticipated hire date is May 1, 2020. The service period is 9 months (September 16 - June 15)The initial appointment will be for 3 years. This position will teach undergraduate in-person and online classes. Outside of the classroom, successful applicants will be expected to help support outreach and our undergraduate research program: these opportunities include UW in the High School, Pre-Major in Astronomy Program (Pre-MAP), the department's campus and mobile planteraria, undergraduate classes in outreach, public observing nights, and maintenance of and visits to the 1-meter teaching telescope at UW's Mantash Ridge Observatory (MRO). The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to academic strategic planning, management, and administration as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in Astronomy or related field. Applicants must also have experience managing grants that are associated with student development and observatories, and direct experience operating and maintaining similar equipment to the department's planetarium, mobile planetarium, and MRO. A successful candidate will have experience in undergraduate education for a diverse student population. Lastly, applicants must also have experience independently developing and teaching classes across a range of sizes and modalities, and are required to have demonstrated success and a record of innovative teaching in delivering large (>250) in-person and online classes of 100 or more students.
