Job Description

The School of Science at Westlake University is now inviting candidates worldwide to apply for Ph.D. positions in Astronomy. Doctoral training in Astronomy is conducted under the University's doctoral program in Physics, and prospective applicants can explore faculty research profiles and detailed research directions via the official website of the Department of Astronomy at Westlake University. Successful applicants will begin their doctoral studies in August 2026.

Founded in February 2018, Westlake University is a forward-thinking institution in China, aspiring to lead in cutting-edge scientific research and transform higher education. Located in the picturesque city of Hangzhou, the university benefits from both private and public-sector support. Over the next decade, a new Department of Astronomy is being established within the School of Science, promoting an inclusive, international, and intellectually stimulating academic environment. Current faculty members work on exoplanets, galaxies and cosmology, transient surveys, and theoretical astrophysics; these areas will continue to expand as additional faculty join. English is the working language of the university; nearly all courses are taught in English.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Hold or will obtain a Bachelor's or Master's degree in physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or a closely related field by August 2026.
  • Have a solid grounding in physics and mathematics.
  • Have a keen interest in astrophysical research and demonstrate strong academic potential.
  • Are proficient in programming (e.g., Python, C++, Julia) and experienced in data analysis. Experience with astronomical datasets is a strong plus.
  • Have good communication skills in English, both written and verbal, and can thrive in a collaborative, international setting.
