Job Description

Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. We thrive on finding and cultivating talented people who are passionate about what they do. Join us and be a part of the diverse Caltech community.

Job Summary

IPAC, in the Physics, Math, and Astronomy Division at Caltech, invites applications for a scientist to work on the NASA Exoplanet Archive and Exoplanet Follow-up Observing Program (ExoFOP), within the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI). The scientist would work with a vibrant team of scientists and developers to populate and improve the NASA Exoplanet Archive, and to carry out their own independent research program. As a part of IPAC, NExScI (nexsci.caltech.edu) provides archive services, community support, science operations, and analysis tools related to the discovery and characterization of planets beyond our solar system (exoplanets) using data from observatories in space and on the ground.

NASA’s Exoplanet Archive and ExoFOP are key components of NExScI. The Exoplanet Archive, NASA’s official repository of confirmed exoplanets and candidates from NASA missions, is used by researchers worldwide and provides an integrated interface of exoplanet system parameters; the ExoFOP provides the exoplanet community with a venue for coordination and sharing of follow-up and precursor data for exoplanets and their host stars. As the exoplanet field expands in the next five years, with the influx of astrometry and microlensing exoplanets from the ESA Gaia mission and the Roman mission, and as the community prepares for the Habitable Worlds Observatory, the Exoplanet Archive and ExoFOP will continue to evolve and expand to meet the needs of the exoplanet community. The successful candidate will have a role in creating and expanding this vibrant, dynamic environment for exoplanet researchers.

Essential Job Duties

  • Work with the NASA Exoplanet Archive and ExoFOP team of scientists and developers to identify new exoplanet datasets and to develop new tools, capabilities, and interfaces with an emphasis on expansion into astrometry, microlensing, and imaging.
  • Network and build relationships with the wider exoplanet and planetary science communities.
  • On a rotating schedule, monitor the published literature and identify and ingest new and updated planetary systems into the archive.
  • Carry out an independent program of research in exoplanet science.

Basic Qualifications

If you have the following in your background, then we want to hear about your interest in joining our team:

  • PhD in astronomy, planetary science or a related discipline and two years of post-PhD experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work well with others on a small team.
  • Knowledge of exoplanet detection and characterization techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

These are a set of skills and experiences which will add to your ability to contribute to the roles and responsibilities of the position. The following attributes would make you a better fit for this position, but even if these do not describe you or your experience, we would still like to hear from you:

  • Strong research background in exoplanet detection and/or characterization.
  • Experience with astrometric or microlensing detection techniques.
  • Knowledge of python and notebook environments for data analysis.

 Required Documents

  • Cover Letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Names and contact information for 3 professional references.
  • Applications are due by June 28, 2024.
  • Apply via Caltech Website
