This is the position of IT Specialist (Systems Administration) in the High Energy Division (HEAD) of the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory. The employee will perform all aspects of computer system management of the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) Unix workstation network of HEAD. Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Acting as principle backup administrator of the HEA/CXC computer network.
• Managing all hardware and software associated with the backup infrastructure which includes managing the Unix servers.
• The employee will be assigned primary responsibilities in the areas of data backup, restoration, management of tape libraries and associated software and hardware.
• Regular and periodic backups of HEA/CXC data volumes, proper labelling and storage of backup tapes as per HEA/CXC policies.
• Restoration of data from backup tapes, periodic and regular reporting of backup activities are part of the responsibilities.
• Writing utilities; to effectively manage or to effective management
• Provide helpdesk support to the users of the HEA/CXC network which would include help with both software and hardware issues of the user community.
