Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tufts University (Medford, MA, USA; https://as.tufts.edu/physics) invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-stream professorship at the Associate Professor level in the field of experimental High-Energy Physics (HEP) at the Energy Frontier. The successful candidate will join the Tufts ATLAS group and assume teaching duties and service, with a target start date of September 1, 2025. We encourage candidates with demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, mentoring, and community development to apply. The Tufts Physics and Astronomy Department consists of eighteen tenured or tenure-track faculty and has strong research programs in high energy physics, condensed matter physics, cosmology, quantum information, astrophysics, and physics education research. The HEP group conducts active and well-funded research consisting of LHC collider and accelerator-based neutrino programs that provide research opportunities to undergraduates and graduate students. Current activities of the Tufts-in-ATLAS group include maintenance, operation, and development of the muon end-cap alignment system, QCD precision measurements, searches for dark matter, and development of AI algorithms applied to inverse problems.

To qualify for the position, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in experimental High Energy Physics at the Energy Frontier with strong experience in analyzing Large Hadron Collider data, and with a track record of securing funding in recent years. We expect the candidate to bring existing funding with them, or to generate research grants after arrival at Tufts. The successful candidate will supervise graduate-student thesis research for the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, and undergraduate senior honors thesis projects. Candidates should have experience in teaching undergraduate physics courses. Additional experience teaching specialized or graduate courses is welcomed, as are examples of previous innovative teaching.

The statement of diversity, equity and inclusion should describe the applicant’s efforts and aspirations to promote equity, inclusion and diversity through teaching, mentoring, research and service. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by February 1, 2025. However, applications received after that date will be considered until the position is filled.
