Job Description

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a research scientist position in the area of exoplanet atmospheres, broadly encompassing topics from characterization to properties of exoplanet host stars and their influences.  The successful candidate would work with Dr. Kevin France, a professor in LASP and the Department of Astrophysical & Planetary Sciences (APS).   Dr. France’s research group (CUSP: https://lasp.colorado.edu/home/cusp/) has active observational programs (with Hubble, Chandra, XMM, JWST, and ground-based facilities) in the areas of exoplanetary atmospheres, high-energy host star characterization, and the properties of star-planet systems.  CUSP is also the lead institution of the CUTE CubeSat mission studying mass-loss in extreme exoplanetary systems, the NASA-funded MANTIS CubeSat studying the connection between high-energy and optical activity on exoplanet host stars, the ESCAPE Small Explorer mission to study EUV radiation and CMEs from nearby stars, and rocket-borne payloads to develop technology for future ultraviolet observatories. The applicant would have a significant fraction of their time available for independent research to develop their own research programs.

LASP offers a diverse set of resources for teaching and research, including access to observational, instrumental, and theoretical facilities. CU is a member of the ARC 3.5-meter telescope and the SDSS V Survey at Apache Point Observatory. LASP is the PI institution of numerous space missions for heliophysics, planetary science, and astrophysics; the candidate would have access to excellent facilities for development of space-borne and ground-based hardware, if applicable.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and a short description of current research accomplishments and future goals. The applicant should also arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent directly to [email protected]. The initial appointment is for one year, with an additional two years expected contingent upon performance and funding. CUSP welcomes researchers interested in contributing to the scientific direction, vibrancy, and climate of the group.

We will begin considering applications on a rolling basis starting November 1st, 2024, and we will accept applications until the position is filled. The start date is flexible, but no later than August 2025. The position could start as early as January 2025.
