SUBARU TELESCOPE/FACILITY MAINTENANCE ENGINEER – ID# 16372
Regular, F/T position w/ Subaru Telescope, NAOJ in Hilo, HI. Duties: Member of Technical Support Division. Coordinate & manage jobs for repair, maint., & upgrades for telescope & its enclosure w/ outsourcing companies & purchasing equip. Duties incl. on-site facility mgmt. at Maunakea summit to diagnose mech. & elec. troubles of telescope & enclosure; plan upgrades of telescope, enclosure & other facilities to accommodate new functions & new astronomical instrumentations & prepare manufacture’s drawing; instruct/direct contractors. Assist in planning, scheduling, & est. cost of future upgrade projects. Shifts sometimes assigned in off-hour, incl. weekends & holidays. Resp. for coordinating & managing repair, maintenance, & upgrades of Hilo base facility equip. Requires: Bachelor’s in Mech. &/or Elec. Eng. At least 5 yrs. exper. in tech. field of Mech. &/or Elec. Eng. At least 3 yrs. exper. in supervising maint./repair staff in astronomical observatories or heavy industrial setting. Working knowl. of Mech. &/or Elec. Eng. Working knowl. of CAD, PC & its off-the-shelf software (e.g., MS Office). Knowl. of Mech. Eng. of large telescopes & enclosures. Valid driver’s license & able to drive 4WD vehicle w/ manual transmission. Post Offer/Emp. Cond: First Aid/CPR cert. (or obtain following training provided w/in 12 mo.). Regular, F/T position w/ Subaru Telescope Project in Hilo, Hawaii. Duties: Responsible for technical maintenance of the commissioned facility instruments & new instrument proj. for Subaru 8.2 Meters Telescope. Keeps the instruments operational. Provides engineering designs of systems (electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics) for upgrades of the commissioned facility instruments & new instruments for Subaru 8.2 Meters Telescope. Requires: Bachelor’s in Engineering, Physics, or Astronomy. 3-5 years of prof. exper. in electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics engineering, incl. exper. in systs. design work. Knowl. of syst. design, interface specs., & syst. documentation techniques. Knowl. of optics theory, instrumentation, & test equip. & procedures. Able to apply fundamental math & stats. analysis techniques, required for astronomical applications. Able to define, design, & construct electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics systems and components, & to test & eval. Good comm. skills. Valid driver’s license.
