Position Overview
ASC Technology Services, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks an IT Support and Research Lead to join our team. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors. The primary IT service provider for the Department of Astronomy, and functions as a member of the Arts and Sciences Technology Services (ASCTech) Operations – Support team, providing all aspects of computer hardware and software support to the College; maintains users’ IT hardware and software, and computer-related instruments and devices; troubleshoots and resolves problems; installs and deploys new/upgraded hardware and software; directly supports other IT facilities such as laboratories, clinics, AV-equipped conference rooms, and computer classrooms in the College; provides technical advice and guidance to IT users including researchers and administration; partners with researchers to actively aid in the design and creation of experiments and experimental tools; recommends solutions and services to meet IT users’ needs; advises on and promotes prescribed security and risk management practices and principles; develops use of technology solutions for faculty research, teaching, and administration; works with ASCTech service providers to manage and carry out all phases of the IT hardware and software life-cycles from need specification to procurement to deployment to decommissioning; specifies and procures needed IT services from ASCTech and OCIO; monitors such services and triages troubleshooting with ASCTech and OCIO; is primary external advocate for technical needs of the Department of Astronomy; acts as contact for the Department of Astronomy, representing, and advocating on full range of IT matters including risk management, audit, emerging technologies and standards, practices and procedures; brings college and university level change initiatives and best practices to the Department of Astronomy; other duties as assigned; may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated proficiency with Linux in a scientific enterprise environment
- Knowledge of storage, file sharing and communications protocols
- High Performance Computing (HPC) experience. Unix scripting and at least one programming language, such as Bash, Python, C, Perl
- Working knowledge of Windows and Macintosh operating systems and hardware
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common Web/Internet applications, working knowledge of supporting end-user computers in a LAN environment
- At least three years of experience working in a customer-focused role; demonstrated ability to work with customers to deliver services and resolve issues; demonstrated problem solving/troubleshooting skills
- Proven ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
Desired Qualifications:
- Scientific background, preferably post-graduate level
- Experience in Astronomy or Physics. Familiarity with scientific computing apps and programming languages
- Previous experience using computer support and management applications such as Satellite, Puppet, SCCM, Casper or Bomgar
- Knowledge of research funding and grant writing
