Job Description

The Millennium Nucleus on Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS) invites applications for postdoctoral positions with an initial duration of two years, with the possibility of extension and sponsorship for other fellowships. YEMS’ scientific goals focus on the detection and characterization of young exoplanets and exomoons (via direct imaging). YEMS is a multidisciplinary astronomy-informatics effort designed to provide a platform where early-career researchers can fully develop their potential while producing excellent science.

We welcome candidates with expertise in high-contrast imaging, interferometry (optical or radio), exoplanet detection, protoplanetary disksexoplanetary science, and/or data science applied to astrophysics. Applicants with a strong background in relevant areas of theoretical and/or observational astrophysics are also encouraged to apply.

Eligibility & timeline

  • Applicants must have, or expect to be awarded, a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or a closely related field before taking the position.
  • Start date: from January 2025 (flexible).
  • Application window: open until positions are filled.

Research environment & facilities

Chile hosts a large and vibrant planetary-science community, with more than 30 astronomers working on exoplanet and planet formation science in Santiago alone. While at YEMS, successful candidates will be eligible for access to the 10% of Chilean observing time at facilities including ALMA, VLT, Gemini South, Magellan, and future observatories such as the ELTRubin Observatory (LSST)GMT, and CTA.

YEMS members lead and participate in numerous projects, including ALMA and VLT/SPHERE observations of protoplanetary disks, IR and submillimeter laboratory measurements of meteorites and cosmic dust, and exoplanet characterization and high-contrast imaging more broadly.

YEMS is committed to advancing gender balance and is guided by the principles of openness and inclusiveness, placing diversity and accessibility at the forefront.

Compensation & resources

The salary is competitive for Chilean standards (USD 25k per year) plus travel, computing, and other research expenses. YEMS provides state-of-the-art computing facilities for both CPU-based and GPU-based workflows.
