The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) has been playing a leading role at the forefront of global astronomical research. ALMA is the largest (sub)mm-wave on-ground telescope and has been producing ground-breaking science since it became operative in 2011. In order to keep its high scientific productivity, ALMA will be upgraded towards addressing the updated scientific goals identified in the ALMA Development Roadmap.
We invite applications for a Full Professor or Executive Engineer position based at the NAOJ Headquarters in Mitaka. The primary role of this position is to lead advancements in radio astronomy through contributions to the operations of ALMA as the East Asia representative in the ALMA Management Team. The successful candidate is expected to oversee and lead the ALMA WSU (Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade) project. The successful candidate is also expected to engage in astronomical research or development of related software and hardware.
The major responsibilities are as follows:
- Project management – Lead and manage the operations, maintenance, and upgrades of ALMA in the NAOJ ALMA Project, working in close coordination and collaboration with the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO), and the European and North American partners;
- International collaboration – Lead the discussion for a wider international collaboration in ALMA in the East Asian region; and
- Synergy and linkage – Explore the synergy of ALMA with the other existing and future observing facilities.
To fulfill this role, the applicant should have a proven track record in astronomical research, technical software/hardware development, and/or observatory operations. We also seek an individual who is motivated to actively contribute to the management of the international organizations of NAOJ and ALMA. English proficiency is necessary since the successful candidate will work in English-speaking teams in NAOJ and in collaboration with the ALMA partners in Chile, Europe, North America, Taiwan, and South Korea.
The successful candidate will be appointed as the Deputy Director of NAOJ ALMA Project.
Compensation and Benefits
Social Insurance: MEXT Mutual Aid Association (health insurance), Employees' Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance, Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance
Salary: Annual salary shall be determined based on professional knowledge, skills, required education, and job experiences as per the NINS regulations (NINS, or the National Institutes of Natural Sciences, is an upper-level organization that manages NAOJ). Payments will be made monthly in 12 equal installments.
Allowances: Dependent allowance, residential allowance, commutation allowance, and other allowances will be paid to employees who meet the conditions outlined in the NINS regulations. An amount equivalent to the year-end allowance and diligence allowance will be included in the annual salary.
Salary Increment: Once a year in accordance with the performance review
Retirement Allowance: Provided
Travel and relocation: Eligible employees will be provided with a relocation travel package to NAOJ, subject to the travel regulations of NINS (details must be arranged with the administration office).
