Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland.  Learn more about our missions.  This position can support hybrid work both onsite and from home. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

STScI has an immediate opening for a Software Engineer in the Catalog Science Branch (CSB) in the Data Management Division (DMD).  The CSB branch is responsible for multi-terabyte astronomical database development and the archived science catalog data management for all missions, including the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope which is scheduled for launch in the mid-2020s. The team builds science data products to service the scientific community as well.

Role & Responsibilities include:

Analyze, design and implement effective data management solutions for high volume astronomical data, both in cloud and on-premises environments

Identifying, designing and implementing internal data process improvements, including re-designing database infrastructure for greater scalability, optimizing data delivery, and automating manual astronomical data ingestion processes

Ability to build processes that support data transformation, workload management, data structures, dependency and metadata management

Collaborate with archive scientists for developing scientific data products

Provide technical support for data ingestion, data transformation, data store and data retrieval activities

Coordinate the migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions

Review SQL queries and recommend areas of improvement

Monitor the database performance by performing regular tests, troubleshooting and integrating new features

Involve in day-to-day data ingestion operations, technical support for any data related activities and production database troubleshooting

Qualifications:

Strong knowledge of RDBMS database structure

Hands on experience with the composition of advanced SQL query and query performance tuning

Experience transforming data in various formats, including JSON, XML, YAML, CSV and other format

Experience with both normalized and dimensional data models, big data technologies on both structured and unstructured data, and hands-on knowledge of data integration techniques.

Experienced with Python programming development

Experienced with agile software development and familiar with CI/CD tools and source control system (Git)

Great verbal and written communication skills to interact, communicate, present and influence with both technical and non-technical team members

Strong analytical skills, persistence in problem-solving, and ability to learn quickly and independently

US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements

Education/ Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related technical or scientific field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in data management.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Range
$80,000USD to $100,000USD
