Job Description

Amherst College’s Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Astronomy beginning in July 2016.  This position is a one-year appointment with full benefits.  Given Amherst’s commitment to cultivating a challenging and inclusive educational environment, we seek candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to teaching, mentoring and inspiring students representing a broad range of classes, genders, races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations and religions.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach two astronomy courses/semester, at least one of which will be an introductory astronomy class for non-majors.  Astronomy faculty at Amherst are also members of the Five College Astronomy Department, consisting of astronomers from the University of Massachusetts and Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges.
A Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field is required; preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral research and teaching experience.
