Job Description
The Institute of Radio Astronomy & Astrophysics (IRyA) of the National Autonomous University of México (UNAM, Morelia Campus) invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Titular Academic Technician (Técnico Académico Titular). Applicants should hold a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field, with extensive knowledge of Radioastronomy, including usage and design of radio telescopes, and have at least two years of international postdoctoral experience gained in a different institution from that in which they received their PhD. Preferably, the candidate should have excellent command of spoken and written Spanish.
The main selection criteria will be outstanding previous accomplishments and proven ability to perform the following tasks:
(1) Designing and executing a plan to search and characterize potential sites to place next-generation VLA (ngVLA) antennas in México, including writing and publishing technical documents with the results of the antenna site analysis.
(2) Co-organize national and international workshops related to the ngVLA project. Deliver talks and organize meetings at state universities and local government agencies to discuss México’s participation in the ngVLA project.
(3) Carry out original research in projects related or not to the ngVLA, establishing collaborations with IRyA´s faculty members.
(4) Contribute to the Radio Astronomy Laboratory at IRyA by providing advanced technical support and proposing specialized upgrade projects.
(5) Teach Astronomy and/or Physics courses at graduate or undergraduate level, as well as mentor students.
(6) Actively participate in outreach activities promoted by IRyA.
Astronomers at Mexican institutions can compete for the Mexican share of observing time at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT, Puebla). The institute provides limited funds for publishing, and limited support for observing and traveling; further funding is available by competing for UNAM and/or other national grants.
