NASA Goddard Research Astrophysicist
Job Summary
Job Description
The Astroparticle Physics Laboratory of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center plans to hire a civil service research astrophysicist for an early-career position with salary commensurate with past experience. The candidate is expected to conduct an independent program of astrophysical research in gamma-ray instrumentation designed for use in space-based gamma-ray telescopes. The primary responsibility will be to develop instrumentation and methods for medium-energy gamma-ray astrophysics. The candidate is expected to lead or participate in defining instrument and mission concepts and proposing them in response to NASA solicitations; and to lead an active program to develop and evaluate technical and data analysis approaches to advance the study of extreme astrophysics using the medium-energy gamma-ray band.
Candidates with experience in medium-energy gamma-ray instrumentation and analysis methods are encouraged to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of research excellence in gamma-ray astrophysics. Knowledge of medium-energy gamma-ray detector systems and the computational tools used to evaluate their performance is important. Experience with scientific balloon campaigns or similar activities that develop and test space-based technologies is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with the analysis and interpretation of medium-energy gamma-ray data, especially spectroscopic data, and advanced statistical and computational methods is an advantage. A strong record of research communication and publications in gamma-ray astrophysics and related fields is preferred. U.S. citizenship is required. A Ph.D. degree in physics, astronomy or a related field is preferred.
