The University of North Georgia Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in astronomy and physics to begin in August, 2020. This position will be located on the UNG Dahlonega campus. As a tenure-track faculty member, scholarship involving undergraduates and service (to the department, College of Science & Mathematics, and/or UNG) are expected. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a commitment to quality teaching and student success. Candidates must show evidence demonstrating an ability to implement a research program. In particular, the candidate must demonstrate clear plans for involving undergraduates in his or her own research or for generating other advanced projects for our physics majors.
The new $1.8M UNG astronomical observatory will be completed this summer and is located near the Dahlonega campus. The departmental astronomers will direct the observatory’s activities in teaching introductory and advanced courses, in student research, and in programs for the general public.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of this position is teaching undergraduate astronomy and physics courses and labs.
The nominal teaching load is 12 credit hours.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to teach other upper-level courses related to their field.
Scholarly work involving undergraduates, advising students, service to the university and community, active participation in departmental activities, maintaining a collegial work environment, and professional development are expected.
Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or a closely related field is require
Postdoctoral experience preferred
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.
Excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and university/community service are requirements for promotion and tenure.
