This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position.
Job Summary: Under direction of the Lick Observatory Superintendent, the Telescope Optoelectronics Technician performs duties in support of astronomical research at the Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, where year-round residential housing with nominal rent is available for the selected candidate. The incumbent independently operates the laser systems and all technical aspects of scientific observations, including electronic and electrical problem solving, to assist astronomers in accomplishing their goals. The incumbent also functions as an electronics technician performing assembly, installation, troubleshooting and repair of complex electronic instrumentation and equipment. The incumbent is cross-trained to independently operate the 120-inch Shane Telescope in all technical aspects to support scientific observations.
Some qualifications include:
• Substantial experience in performing technical tasks in the operation, installation, testing and maintenance of electronic and electrical equipment.
• Excellent diagnostic and trouble-shooting skills for digital and analog circuitry, computers (Linux, Windows), video systems or other electronic devices.
• Skill in using electronic instrumentation such as oscilloscope, digital multimeter, frequency counters, power supplies and data acquisition equipment.
