Leiden Observatory invites applications for one or two fixed-term lectureships. These six-year fixed-term positions will consist of 60% research and 40% teaching. The research component can be in any of the research areas in which the Observatory is active. These include cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, interstellar matter and star formation, stars and planetary systems, computational astrophysics, high-energy astrophysics, laboratory astrophysics, astrochemistry and instrumentation. The (English language) teaching component will strengthen the existing BSc and MSc Astronomy programs in Leiden. The successful applicant(s) will assume responsibility for a number of teaching components, building on existing material, updating and expanding this as needed.
Leiden Observatory, founded in 1633, is the oldest university astronomy department in the world. With about 25 faculty, over 40 postdoctoral associates and about 75 PhD students, it is the largest astrnomy department in the Netherlands. The steadily increasing inflow of students is 60-100 per year in the BSc program and 25-30 per year in the MSc program. Leiden is a charming university town with an international flair.
The successful candidate(s) must have a PhD in astronomy and several years of postdoctoral experience. Academic teaching experience will be an asset. Starting dates will be September 1, 2017, or earlier.
