Scientist or Engineer - Radar Systems

Summary

Working with Federal and commercial industry partners, the Green Bank Observatory is developing high-frequency radar transmission capabilities. This position is for a scientist or engineer to lead the requirements development for the design, build, and operation of a radar transmit system using the 100-m diameter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, WV, and potentially other U.S. telescopes.

This position can be taken at the Green Bank Observatory, at the applicant’s home institution or any AUI institution (Green Bank, WV; Charlottesville, VA; Socorro, NM; Albuquerque, NM; Washington, DC). Regular travel to Green Bank from remote work locations will be required as part of this position.

The position is initially a 3-year appointment, with renewal thereafter anticipated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides assistance and leadership in designing, developing, and implementing an overall radar strategy for Green Bank in collaboration with Green Bank and NRAO staff.

Actively participate in the transmit system design and development activities.

Participate in development of descriptive materials for use in demonstrating the radar capabilities to others.

Manage and execute ongoing Green Bank radar activities and observations.

Aids in the testing of new radar systems, as needed.

Assist in seeking external funding to continue development the radar program.

Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Education:

A Doctorate in astronomy, physical science, engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent work experience, is required.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in requirements development, technical specification, design, construction, and/or operation of ground-to-space radar systems for commercial or research organizations.

Skills:

Excellent understanding of radar theory, radar system design, radar data reduction/handling, and practical systems deployment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to communicate comfortably and effectively with other scientists, technical staff, site management, and outside radar users. Must excel at working in a collaborative team-based environment.

Other:

Occasional domestic travel is required. Must be able to work a varied flexible work schedule. US citizenship required.
