Job Description
We are advertising a 4 year PhD position within the context of the Horizon-Widera EXCOSM project on Galaxies and the Cosmic Web. The position is shared between the University of Groningen, at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute (the Netherlands), University of Lorraine (France) and the University of Tartu, at Tartu Observatory (Estonia). During the PhD period the first 1+1 years will be spent at the University of Lorraine and at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, the last 2 years at Tartu Observatory.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual interested in studying the cosmic web environment. The project focuses on the detection and characterization of the walls and voids in the spatial galaxy distribution of the cosmic web, combining mathematical concepts from stochastic geometry and persistent (algebraic) topology. The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Elmo Tempel (Tartu Observatory), Prof. Rien van de Weygaert (Kapteyn Astronomical Institute) and Prof. Radu Stoica (University of Lorraine). A more detailed description of the PhD project can be found here https://owncloud.ut.ee/owncloud/s/gNtQc9ttsfAttqx
We seek excellent students with a strong background in cosmology, astrophysics, physics, mathematics and/or computer sciences. To be eligible to apply, a candidate must hold a Master's or equivalent degree in Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, by the starting date of the enrolment (1 September 2025). Previous research experience and skills will be important criteria for selection. English is the common language spoken at research institutes, and proficiency in English is a requirement for acceptance.
The application deadline is May 15, 2025. Applications should be submitted through the University of Tartu admission system. Entry requirements and more detailed information can be found here https://estonia.dreamapply.com/en_GB/courses/course/1347-phd-chemical-and-physical-sciences-specialisation-space-research-and-technology
