Job Description

The Astrophysics Office of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center invites expressions of interest in an anticipated position as a civil service research astrophysicist in the area of X-ray Astronomy research. The anticipated position would be either at the GS-13 level, which is typically commensurate with an early career PhD scientist with 2-3 years of research experience beyond the PhD, or the GS-14 level, which is typically commensurate with 3-10 years of research experience. The successful candidate will contribute to one or more of several projects such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Small Explorer Mission called the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and/or the development X-Ray optics and/or X-ray detector development. The position requires a mastery of one or more specialty areas in astronomy, astrophysics or physics sufficient to apply new developments and theories to critical and novel problems; extend and modify approaches, precedents, and methods to solve a variety of scientific and technical problems; and make decisions or recommendations that significantly affect the content, interpretation, or development or the research programs mentioned above. The work includes the resolution of a broad range of critical or highly unusual scientific and/or technical problems, development of innovative approaches or guides, or the determination of the effectiveness and validity of proposed or current programs. The scientist also serves as an expert advisor and consultant to officials and managers within or outside the agency on a broad range of scientific activities and broad policy issues.
