Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Leonardo dos Santos and Dr. Joshua Lothringer on observational studies of atmospheres of hot, gas-giant exoplanets, specifically the properties of their upper atmospheres and a detailed study of the lower atmosphere of the hottest known exoplanet. This research will include analysis and interpretation of UV observations with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and near-IR observations with the NIRISS instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is flexible, but it can start as early as October 2026. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

STScI, located on the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. Salary range: 74-85K. Additionally, the post-doctoral researcher will be inserted within the Transiting Exoplanets Research group of STScI and will have ample opportunities to engage with other related groups, such as the Extrasolar Planetary Systems Imaging Group and our colleagues at JHU.

Any questions about the position should be directed to Dr. Dos Santos, [email protected].

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas in desirable: (a) UV/near-IR spectroscopy; (b) data reduction and instrumental systematics of space-based observations; (c) exoplanet transits, eclipses and/or phase curves; (d) atmospheric escape. More important are creativity, willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.
