Job Description

We invite applications for two Postdoctoral Research Positions to join the DEMOBLACK group at Heidelberg University, led by Prof. Michela Mapelli. The positions are funded by the ERC Advanced Grant IMblack and focus on investigating the formation of intermediate-mass black holes through very massive star evolution, stellar collisions, and N-body simulations. The Center for Astronomy of Heidelberg University offers a first-class research environment with outstanding computational resources and is embedded in the vibrant Heidelberg astronomical community.

We seek candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

-    Massive star evolution,
-    Stellar collisions with hydrodynamical simulations,
-    Direct N-body and population-synthesis simulations.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a related field by the start of the appointment. The positions are initially for 2 years, with the possibility of a one-year extension based on performance.

The start date is flexible, with a preference for Fall 2026. The positions offer a competitive salary in accordance with German regulations.

Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests (maximum 3 pages), and a complete list of publications. They should also arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to Michela Mapelli, [email protected]. Applications sent by December 3, 2025 will receive full consideration. Applications after this date are still welcome until the positions are filled.
