Postdoc in Radio Astronomy – Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU Munich)
Job Summary
Job Description
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in the Cosmology and Structure Formation group of the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich (LMU Munich). The successful applicant will work closely with Prof. Mohr and Dr. Roychowdhury and others at the LMU to actively engage in radio astronomy studies using the MeerKAT facility, an SKA precursor array in South Africa. The focus of the work will be the development and testing of methods for calibrating on-the-fly interferometric observations from MeerKAT and their application to new wide-field surveys such as MeerKLASS. The new team member will collaborate with the teams of Prof. Mario Santos (University of Western Cape, SA) and Dr. Matthias Hoeft (Thüringer Landessternwarte, DE) as well as the broader D-MeerKAT team, which currently involves groups from eleven German universities and research institutes. Other members of our LMU-Munich research group are focused on multiwavelength studies of galaxy clusters, galaxies and AGN using data from MeerKAT radio surveys, South Pole Telescope mm-wave surveys, the eROSITA X-ray survey, the optical Dark Energy Survey as well as the new Euclid mission and upcoming Rubin Observatory.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. Experience with radio interferometric imaging will be a major advantage. The two year position is available as of 1. January, 2024. This is a research position at the German E13 salary scale, and it is open to all qualified individuals, regardless of nationality. German language skills are not required. The initial appointment will have the possibility of extension, pending good progress and availability of funding. Please send a CV, a publication list, and a statement of research interests. In addition, please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to Prof. Mohr. Applications should be received by September 18, 2023.
