Project Coordinator, Simons Observatory

POSITION SUMMARY

The Simons Observatory, a large international, scientific collaboration with ~40 member institutions, including the Simons Foundation, is a project that aims to build and deploy state-of-the-art millimeter wave telescopes in the Atacama Desert of Chile to research the beginning and evolution of the universe. Further project details may be found on the Simons Observatory website. A major technical challenge is the design and fabrication of silicon components that comprise the sensor arrays and readout hardware which instrument the telescope cameras. Many of these components are fabricated at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, CO. 

We seek a highly motivated and organized Project Coordinator for all NIST-related activities of the Simons Observatory. Reporting to the Data & Pipeline Project Leader at CCA in New York City, the person in this position will be the main point of contact between NIST and the Simons Observatory collaboration for all items pertaining to NIST deliverables to the project. 

This is a full-time position that is remotely located in Boulder, CO. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility for renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Aid in the development and upkeep of a NIST delivery schedule;
• Communicate schedules and updates with members of the collaboration;
• Enter and maintain fabrication-part information into a custom database that has been developed for the Simons Observatory;
• Attend relevant collaboration teleconferences and provide a summary of meetings to NIST staff; and
• Handle shipping and receiving of all NIST-related parts for the Simons Observatory.
• In addition to these duties, the successful applicant may also assist in the following technical duties:
  • writing technical documents;
  • room temperature verification of silicon components;
  • assembly of detector arrays; and
  • testing of multiplexing readout components.     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering-related field 

Experience:

• Minimum of two to four years of experience working with a scientific project

Related Skills & Other Requirements:

• Demonstrated organizational skills, which includes time management, task prioritization, information and data management. 
• Ability to work collaboratively in a large scientific project 
• Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Comfortable with database systems  
• Strong interest in science and astrophysics
