Job Description

ScienceBetter Consulting, via a contract with the Astrophysical Data System (ADS), is seeking a part-time Community Engagement Coordinator to engage with all disciplines funded by NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD), including Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Heliophysics, Earth Science, plus those from NASA’s Division of Biological and Physical Sciences. The ADS is expanding its digital library beyond the field of astrophysics to include the scholarly products from all SMD disciplines. This new project is dubbed the NASA Science Explorer (or NASA SciX). We seek a community manager to introduce the non-Astro scientific communities to this new platform. 

The Community Manager will take the lead engagement efforts with NASA SMD communities. Activities include:

  • Development of asynchronous web-based educational materials aimed at the SMD communities such as screencasts and blog posts.
  • Development and delivery of in-person and online workshops.
  • Help plan and participate in usability testing for the new SciX interface.
  • Identification and engagement in relevant online forums used by SMD communities.
  • Active participation in conferences relevant to the SMD communities, including meetings of the Division of Planetary Science of the AAS, the American Geophysical Union, the American Astronomical Society, Earth Science Information Partners, the American Meteorological Society, and the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
  • Coordination with the efforts of the NASA Transform to Open Science (TOPS) effort. 
  • Development of an ambassadors program to spread the word about NASA SciX within their respective communities.
  • Assisting with convening an advisory group which will advise NASA SciX on the overall operations of the project, recommending changes and improvements to both its services and procedures in order to maximize the scientific productivity of the community it serves.

The individual will be expected to have occasional in-person meetings at the ADS office in Cambridge, MA but to predominately work remotely.

Job Requirements:

  • Interest in making the scientific literature discoverable, inclusive, accessible, and reproducible. 
  • Enthusiastic about traveling to many scientific meetings.
  • Familiarity with the functionality and role of the ADS.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with the Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Heliophysics, and/or Earth Science communities.
  • Experience with scientific community engagement.
  • Experience with developing educational and marketing materials to a scientific audience.
