Postdoctoral researcher in mm-VLBI observations of black hole jets
Job Summary
Lethbridge AB
Canada
Job Description
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position focusing on the study of black hole jets with Prof. Alexandra Tetarenko in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Lethbridge. This position is planned for one year, with an extension for a second year contingent on performance and the availability of funding. The successful candidate will work on mm-VLBI observations of jets launched from Galactic black hole X-ray binary systems. Additionally, there is the opportunity to get involved in the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, for which Prof. Tetarenko is a leading member.
The successful candidate will be expected to spend 70% of the time on the predefined mm-VLBI project, and will be given 30% of the time for independent research. The start date for the position is set at April 2026, but this is negotiable. This is a grant-funded position and will include a generous stipend, travel funds, and high-performance computing equipment.
Qualifications: PhD in Astrophysics or related field. Expertise in VLBI observations (in particular at mm wavelengths with the GMVA) and VLBI imaging techniques is desired.
Applications should be submitted via email ([email protected]) to Prof. Tetarenko by Oct 15, 2025, to receive full consideration. A complete application must include: (1) cover letter, (2) two-page statement describing up to 3 research-related contributions and up to 3 leadership-related contributions that you consider to be the most important so far in your career, (3) 2-page research proposal, (4) CV with a publication list, and (5) contact information for 2 references who may be contacted to submit confidential letters.
The University of Lethbridge hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community.
