Job Description

The X-ray Astronomy Team at NASA’s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center invites applications for a mid-career Federal Civil Service position in X-ray optics (see USAJOBS link belown - NOTE: position closes on July 20, 2018).

The successful applicant will be expected to lead or contribute to one or more of the Team’s research projects and to conduct original and productive research addressing the Team’s goals in X-ray optics.

The primary goals of the Team are (a) to develop lightweight, high-resolution X-ray optics for future X-ray astronomy missions, (b) to advance X-ray optics technologies for near-term applications, and (c) to support current projects. The Team is involved in several on-going projects---including Project Science for the Chandra X-ray Observatory (now in its 19th year of operation), Principal Investigator for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE, to be launched in 2021), participant in the Astronomical Roentgen Telescope – X-ray Concentrator (ART-XC) telescope for the Russian mission Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG, to be launched in 2018), and Study Science for the Lynx X-ray astronomy mission concept. The Team has developed, fabricated, and delivered (or will deliver) numerous X-ray mirror module assemblies for several satellite and sub-orbital missions---including SRG and IXPE. Other research projects include development of grazing-incidence optics for planetary applications, for plasma diagnostics at pulsed-energy machines, and for cold-neutron imaging.
