Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Universidad Andres Bello (UNAB) invites applications for a Faculty Position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Astrophysics at the Concepción Campus. The UNAB Institute of Astrophysics (IA) hosts a friendly and stimulating international research environment composed of 15 Faculty, 10 postdocs and about 20 graduate students. The main research topics carried out are exoplanets, proto-planetary disks, stellar evolution and populations, Milky Way, globular clusters, gaseous/stellar dynamics and structure of galaxies, galaxy formation and evolution, gravitational waves, active galactic nuclei, gravitational lensing, and galaxy clusters and cosmology. Members of the IA have access to state-of-the-art observational infrastructure in Chile (e.g. ESO, Las Campanas, Gemini-South, ALMA, CTIO, among others) and observational datasets (e.g. APOGEE, VVVX, LSST, 4MOST and SDSSV when in operation). In addition, the IA hosts a cluster for numerical simulations and high-volume data reduction and analysis. Astronomers in the Concepcion Campus are fully integrated with all the activities and developments of the IA. The Concepcion group currently includes three professors, two postdocs and one PhD student. A new bachelor program in Astronomy started in March 2025 and will be a key component of the vigorous expansion of this group, with the ambition to become a pole of attraction for talents at all levels (students and researchers) to develop world-class cutting-edge astronomical research and education. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy or Physics and is expected to teach in Spanish within one year. The position is open to all areas of astrophysics and the priority for the hiring will be given according to: (i) excellence in research; (ii) potential for generating synergies with UNAB astronomers and local universities or complementing the astronomy group at UNAB with new research areas and/or technical expertise; (iii) commitment with teaching and student supervision, and with outreach. Preference may be given to female candidates. We also encourage applications from disabled individuals, and candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds.
