Job Description
The Collaborative Research Center 1601 (CRC 1601: https://sfb1601.astro.uni-koeln.de) combines four methodological pillars: observational astronomy, instrumentation, laboratory astrophysics, and computational astrophysics to study the ‘Habitats of Massive Stars across Cosmic Time’ . Within CRC 1601, you will work in the theoretical astrophysics group of Prof. Dr. Walch (https://astro.uni-koeln.de/walch-gassner).
Your Tasks:
- Computational Astrophysics Research on the topic of the habitats of massive stars across cosmic time within CRC 1601, including code development and simulations related to massive star formation or stellar feedback in galaxies, possibly including synthetic observations.
- Teaching (4 hours per week): Independent teaching of courses in the physics MSc and BSc at the University of Cologne and the related teaching coordination (e.g. preparation of lecture notes and scripts, organisation of seminars, tutorials, and exams). Further, the (co-)supervision of BSc. and MSc. projects is a possibility.
- Engagement in the support of the CRC 1601 activities e.g. (co-) organizing and joining retreats and regular meetings, supporting diversity, or outreach projects is welcome.
Your Profile:
- You have a PhD or equivalent in physics/ astrophysics / astronomy or comparable.
- You enjoy teaching courses in physics and astronomy and ideally you have some experience in doing so.
- You are fluent in English (written and spoken) and, ideally, also in German.
- You can think analytically and work independently, systematically and constructively.
- You have experience in writing research papers and/or scientific grant proposals.
- You are highly motivated to work in a vibrant, multicultural collaboration.
The general work arrangement is 'in-person', but home office days are possible upon agreement.

The position is available from 15.03.2025 on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week). The position is to be filled for a fixed term until 30.06.2027. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary will be based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector. This approximately corresponds to a net (after tax, health insurance etc.) monthly salary of around 3500 Euros.
