Postdoctoral Position in star formation at galactic scales
Job Summary
Lyon
France
Job Description
We invite applications for a 2 year Postdoctoral Research Position to work on star formation in galaxies from a theoretical and computational perspective. The position is funded by the French National Research Agency with Dr. Fensch as PI. The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr. Fensch and his team at the Center for Research in Astrophysics of Lyon, within the AstroENS research team based at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
The project main purpose is to understand the effect of large scale dynamical processes on the star formation efficiency of galaxies at the scale of star-forming clouds. We will focus on supersonic turbulence and its impacts on micro-physics affecting star-formation: mainly gas chemistry, cosmic ray transport and dust evolution. Multi-scale simulations will be run using the RAMSES code, but prior experience with it is not a prerequisite. However, experience with hydrodynamical simulations (e.g. for cosmology, galaxies, ISM, etc.) is desirable.
The AstroENS team specialises in theoretical and numerical astrophysics, on topics ranging from planet formation (ERC PODCAST) to cosmology (ERC Arthus). Our team members actively contribute to the development of cutting-edge astrophysical codes, such as RAMSES, DYABLO and SHAMROCK. We place a strong emphasis on fostering productive collaborations across different disciplines and maintaining close ties with observers located at the Lyon Observatory, known as the birthplace of the MUSE@VLT instrument.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Astrophysics, or a closely related field.
The position will stay open after the deadline until it is filled. Starting date as early as March 2025.
The ENS de Lyon is an equal opportunity employer and particularly encourages applications from minorities.
Compensation and Benefits
National medical insurance, maternity/paternity leaves, family supplement for children, participation to public transport fees (75%), pension contributions. School is free in France for children above 3.
The Université de Lyon provides support for the administrative settling in Lyon and France.
The base monthly gross salary for a post-doc after PhD graduation is 2750€/month, and is commensurate with previous post-doc experience.
Application Details
i) a CV including a publication list,
ii) a statement of past research and research interests (no more than 4 pages),
iii) arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly to [email protected].
