Job Description

The X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center plans to hire an early career civil service research astrophysicist.  As a Research Astrophysicist, the successful candidate is expected to conduct an independent program of astronomical research, studying active galaxies, black holes, neutron stars, clusters of galaxies, supernova remnants, or other cosmic X-ray sources.  The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to lead or be involved in the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation for X-ray astrophysics, such as X-ray polarimeters, X-ray imaging systems, or high throughput or extremely high resolution X-ray optics.  The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in definition of new missions and instruments, and proposing them in response to NASA solicitations.

Candidates with experience developing instrumentation or performing research applicable to the development of instrumentation for X-ray astrophysical or related applications should apply.  U.S. citizenship is required.  A Ph.D. degree is highly desirable.  This is an early career position:  the appointment is for a GS-12/13 position with salary commensurate with the applicant’s past experience.
