Job Description

The Argelander Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in cosmology within the newly established Cluster of Excellence Dynaverse.
The appointment is initially for three years, with the possibility of an extension based on performance and the availability of funding. The preferred starting date is autumn 2026, although this is negotiable.

The successful candidate will conduct research at the interface of cosmoIogy, statistics, and artificial intelligence, developing and applying state-of-the-art machine-learning and statistical techniques to the analysis of large-scale cosmological data. Particular emphasis will be placed on extracting information about the physics of the early Universe from current and upcoming galaxy surveys. Possible research directions include, but are not limited to, primordial non-Gaussianity, Cosmic Collider physics, cosmological parameter inference, field-level analyses, and other AI-driven approaches to cosmology.

We welcome applicants working broadly at the intersection of cosmology, machine learning, statistics, and scientific computing. Expertise in areas such as simulation-based inference, Bayesian statistics, generative models, emulation, large-scale structure, or related topics is particularly welcome.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant cosmology program at Bonn and the interdisciplinary research environment of Dynaverse, working closely with researchers across the Cluster of Excellence. The position offers opportunities to contribute to major international collaborations and to interact with experts in cosmology, artificial intelligence, statistics, and radio astronomy.

The position includes a leading role within the Dynaverse cosmology program, helping to coordinate research activities while working closely with a team of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The successful candidate will be expected to take scientific leadership within the project, mentor junior researchers, and contribute to the development of new research directions aligned with the goals of Dynaverse.

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain before the starting date) a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, computer science, statistics, or a closely related discipline. We seek candidates with an outstanding research record, strong computational skills, and experience in one or more areas related to cosmology, statistical inference, or artificial intelligence. Excellent written and oral communication skills, scientific leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment are essential.

The position is funded according to the German public service salary scale TV-L E13, including the standard social security benefits.
