The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), a member of the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) invites applications for a staff position to conduct astronomical observations with the optical/infrared instrumentation at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) 1.5m Tillinghast telescope, and the FLWO 1.2m telescope, both located on Mt. Hopkins in Amado, AZ.
Duties include operating the telescopes and associated instrumentation, analyzing the resulting data for quality and adjusting the telescope or instrument accordingly, and reporting results to scientists or other professionals.
The successful candidate for this position should have an interest in astronomy, and the ability to work independently at a remote location on a variable work schedule of several nights on, then off, based on the telescopes’ schedules. Experience in operating telescopes and some familiarity with spectroscopy is desirable, but training will be provided.
