Postdoctoral Position In Extragalactic Astronomy
Job Summary
Madrid Madrid
Spain
Job Description
Applications are invited for 3 Postdoctoral Positions at the Centro de Astrobiologia (CAB, CSIC-INTA) in Madrid, Spain, to work on galaxy evolution studies, funded by the ERC Starting Grant, "DistantDust" (PI: Irene Shivaei).
POSTDOC #1 and #2
Two positions are open for theoretical or observational candidates interested in evolutionary studies of dust, gas, and star formation of intermediate and high redshift galaxies. The postdoctoral researchers will work on 1) ongoing projects with JWST spectro-photometric data within various international collaborations, and 2) the ALMA cycle 11 Large program (ACE: ALMA Chemical Evolution survey) for CO and dust observations at cosmic noon.
POSTDOC #3
One position is open for a candidate interested in developing machine learning techniques to explore evolution of dust properties. The candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Irene Shivaei (CAB) and Dr. Shoubaneh Hemmati (Caltech/IPAC). The position will be based in Madrid, with potential extended trips to Pasadena, USA.
Successful candidates will be integrated into various international JWST and ALMA collaborations, as well as the extragalactic group at CAB, which has major involvements in the JWST MIRI and NIRSpec constructions and the GTO programs. They will also be able to spend a fraction of their time on their independent research.
The positions can start as soon as mutually agreed. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field before the commencement of the position. The appointments are for three years and come with a competitive salary for Spain, travel funds, and social security for the employee and their family.
CAB is a multi-disciplinary institute funded jointly by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA). It has two campuses at the site of ESA European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) and INTA. Postdocs will reside at the site on INTA, where most of the extragalactic JWST researchers are based, with the possibility to frequently visit ESAC if desired. As part of the Spain community, the postdocs will have access to the following observational facilities: ESO (including VLT, ALMA), IRAM/NOEMA, and facilities at La Palma including GTC 10.4m optical telescope (and partners such as LMT), and ING.
Compensation and Benefits
The successful candidates will be part of the ERC Starting Grant "DistantDust". The appointments are for three years and come with a competitive salary for Spain (determined at a national level based on experience), travel funds, and social security and health insurance for the employee and their family.
