PFS INSTRUMENT SOFTWARE ENGINEER – ID# 222151
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,553.00/Mon.
DUTIES: Provides professional software engineering (analysis, design, implementation, testing & maintenance), &system admin for Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) & other astron instr & related peripheral systems. Focuses on PFS software work as proj proceeds through commissioning to open-use, but may become involved with other NAOJ projects. Drives proj vehicles to access summit sites. May be req to provide night time support for engineering & observing runs.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Sci, Software Eng, physics, astron, or other related flds in which significant coursework in software development can be demonstrated. EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of exper in analysis, design & production of Linux application software for control of astron or other sci or eng instr & processes. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Proficiency in C/C++, Python, Java & systems & application prog on Linux systems. Knowl of software design, implementation & maintenance on Linux systems. Knowl of admin of Linux computer sys & ntwrk. Ability to analyze, define, design, implement, test, eval & maintain complex software sys. Ability to work efficiently in a multinational & multicultural environ. Good written & oral communication & documentation skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license (& if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insur equiv to Hawaii No-Fault Driver’s Insur) & maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4WD vehicle. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 ft &d pass a post offer high-alt medical exam. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or univ in Sci or Eng. Exper with FPGA/PLC programming for connected peripherals & embedded device programming. Exper with ntwk distributed control/software sys. Exper with Graphical User Interface development. Exper w/collaborative software development w/distributed version control sys.
