The Georgia State University (GSU) Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy operates the CHARA Array at Mount Wilson Observatory in California. The CHARA Array is one of the most powerful and productive optical interferometers in the world, and CHARA scientists are engaged in frontier studies in stellar astrophysics using the Array. CHARA is seeking to hire a Visitor Support Scientist at the Array. The position will be located at the Array, which is a relatively short drive from La Canada, Los Angeles, CA. This is part of an NSF/MSIP funded five-year program to open up the CHARA Array to the broader community. The job will include the following duties:
- Designing and managing a scientific outreach program on interferometry (including the CHARA Array Webpage) to help promote the scientific use of the CHARA Array and other interferometers.
- Conducting community workshops at locations around the country.
- Working with interested scientists to help plan observations and prepare proposals for use of the CHARA Array.
- Helping implement visitor observations.
- Helping visiting scientists to reduce data into a science ready form.
- Developing documentation on the preparation of observations at the CHARA Array and the reduction of CHARA Array data.
- Involvement in the writing of funding proposals.
- Development of their own research at CHARA.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in a related field and five years of experience in a scientific or research organization. The candidate must have an excellent understanding of the technique of interferometry and its application in astrophysics.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Experience in the use of stellar interferometers.
- Experience with the instruments at CHARA or a similar facility.
- Experience with imaging analysis software tools.
- A record of independent research.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Willingness to work night-time hours.
