Research Assistant Professor - UW Astronomy

The Astronomy Department at the University of Washington (UW) invites applications for the position of Research Assistant Professor. This position will be expected to engage in activities that complement and extend the Department's efforts in developing software infrastructure for the instrumentation, commissioning, and operation of large surveys.

Members of the Astronomy Department are active in multiple large astronomical surveys, e.g., with recent involvement in ZTF and WFIRST, and as among the long-term and founding institutions of both the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and of Rubin/LSST. The university maintains a large group developing the algorithms and software for scheduling and processing Rubin/LSST data, and is an associate member of the SDSS-V collaboration including in developing instrumentation and software infrastructure for this now-underway phase of SDSS. This position will be expected to engage in research that in the near-term supports such aspects especially of SDSS-V at UW

To support this work, the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington (www.astro.washington.edu) seeks to fill a full-time 12 month, non-tenured, research faculty position at the level of Research Assistant Professor. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the development of survey software and instrumentation development, obtain extramural funding, and foster an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. In addition, this position will work with other faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students whose current activities and research interests align through mentorships and collaborations. This position is available immediately.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics. In addition, applicants must have a combined total of 5 years of post-Ph.D. expertise in each of the following areas relating to large astronomical surveys: software development/engineering; telescope instrumentation; instrumentation software interfaces; optimizing survey commissioning, data, and operations. Applicant must have a combined total of 2 years of expertise in each of the following areas: programs C++, Python, database development, and web languages. Lastly, applicants must have 2 years of experience in mentoring students and postdoctoral scholars.
