Job Description

As NASA prepares for the Habitable Worlds Observatory and potential future Far-Infrared Missions, there is a need for multi-generational scientists, technology development and insight/oversight teams. Thus, NASA MSFC has authorized the hiring of a mid-career GS 14 Astrophysicist to sustain MSFC’s expertise in space telescope technology development and to enable future Astrophysics missions from inception to launch.

It is expected that the selected candidate will actively participate in the Great Observatory Maturation Process (GOMAP) for the Habitable Worlds Observatory and potential future Far-Infrared and X-Ray missions.

The position will open in USAJOBS from July 27, 2023 to July 31, 2023. Interested persons are encouraged to familiarize themselves with USAJOBS and to prepare required documentation, including:

  1. A resume that clearly addresses the requested specialized experience [use of the online USAJOBS resume builder is recommended], and
  2. Copies of university transcripts.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a U.S. citizen with an established and demonstrated capability to:

  • Lead Astrophysics projects or teams and submit winning research and technology development proposals.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in areas of telescope optical systems design, development, fabrication, and test, characterization of meter or larger class UVO quality aspheric optics for space telescopes (i.e., prescription, surface figure and roughness, etc.), performance modeling, integration, and alignment for telescopes of future missions such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory and/or Far-Infrared Observatories.
  • Collaborate with other NASA Centers, Government Agencies, Industry and Academia.
  • Mentor early career scientists, engineers, and student interns with a commitment to actualizing NASA’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility principles.
