The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, MD, is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope. Description:
The Observation Planning Branch (OPB) in the Science Operations and Engineering Division (SCOPE) at STScI seeks a Science Operations Analyst (#7677) to support observing proposal selection for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This team is passionate about the work they do in support of astronomers around the world, with the goal of expanding humanity’s exploration of the Universe.
Responsibilities:
Preparation for Proposal Reviews
- Support creation and updating of the Call for Proposals. Participate in requirements development for software used in proposal definition and in proposal review.
- Communicate proposal procedures, schedules, etc. as needed at science conferences.
During Proposal Reviews
- Monitor and process submissions of proposals for HST and JWST observing time.
- Load the proposals into a tracking database. Assign proposals to peer review panels and to individual panelists. Support logistics for review meetings. Report proposal statistics. Assemble review results for presentation to STScI Director. Send decision notifications to proposers.
Qualifications:
- Ability to formulate and resolve problems through research and application of standard scientific, mathematical and computational skills and techniques
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective internal and external working relationships,
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and follow-through
- Capacity to work in and actively contribute to a team work environment
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends a couple of times per year while proposal reviews are in progress.
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Astronomy, Physics or related field.
Experience:
- Previous experience managing astronomical observing proposal selection and/or the selection of other scientific research proposals is preferred, but not required.
- Experience in astronomical observatory operations is desirable.
Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.
Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.
