Job Description

OBSERVATION SYSTEM ASSOCIATE – ID# 18628.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position w/the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, located in Maunakea & Hilo, Hawai‘i.  DUTIES:  Takes overall responsibility of the operation of the telescope, instruments & observation control system, & assists observers.  Collects system & environmental data. Monitors system status, alarms/warnings or error messages, diagnoses problems w/the system & takes remedial actions. Keeps record of the operation of the telescope, reports & files system problems/trouble reports, & is responsible for nighttime operations of the telescope. Responsible for ensuring telescope settings provide optimal viewing observations.  Observes weather conditions to determine suspension of observations.  REQUIRES:  Associate's Degree from an accredited community college w/emphasis in Astronomy, Science or a technical field.  1-3 years of experience working in a large astronomy observatory or other large scientific/research platform.  Knowledge of astronomical telescopes &/or instruments.  Ability to perform telescope startup, shutdown, & troubleshooting & interact & communicate.  Must possess valid driver’s license & able to drive 4WD w/manual transmission; Certification in 1st Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain w/i 12 months from hire);  Certification in EMR for Adult 1st Aid, emergency oxygen administration & AED (or be able to obtain w/i 12 months from hire).  Able to sleep at high altitudes; lift/carry 30 pounds of equipment; climb ladders; crawl on hands into narrow spaces & work in narrow areas.  Must be able to work at 14,000ft. & pass post offer high-altitude medical exam.
