What does it mean to be an expert media source?
Reporters often need quotes for their stories from experts in the astronomy community. They may be looking for someone to explain a recent research result to them, comment on a new finding, or provide insight into an upcoming astronomical event. They might want emailed answers, a short phone interview, or even a video or audio clip that they can play live.
The media often reach out to the AAS Press Office asking to be connected to experts. We'd like to make sure the people we refer them to are representative of our community!
Where does my information go?
When you sign up here, your information will not be posted publicly. The AAS Press Office will maintain this as an internal database, and if a media inquiry comes in that fits your expertise, we may connect you with the reporter who submitted the inquiry.
What makes a good expert media source?
Expert media sources don't have to know everything! Don't feel like you have to be a seasoned pro before you can interact with the media — you are an expert in your field, and you'll assuredly be able to offer useful insight.
One of the most important features of a source is to be available on rapid timelines — journalists often have very short deadlines and need to reach someone quickly.
Beyond that, being able to communicate clearly and without jargon is critical. You can find some tips for talking with the media here.
