The charge of this Presidential Advisory Task Force is to provide recommendations to the AAS President on how to engage with the astronomy community on the use of AAS journals data in large language model (LLM) development.
The AAS is a professional society of a relatively small field, and we operate our own family of journals. These are among the dominant professional journals in our field, thereby presenting the possibility that the AAS may be approached by a private firm seeking access to AAS journals for LLM training. The job of this Task Force is to explore the nuances around such a decision, particularly for our members, and provide recommendations to the AAS President for how to communicate with our membership about these issues. The Task Force expects to complete its work within 6 months and submit its report to the President in the summer of 2026.
